Look for something fun to make with kids???

What are you up to this winter break?  I know I am looking for fun things to do with the kids!  I found this fun crafts the kids and I will definitely be doing!

MOON SAND

Moon Sand is a ton of fun and can be enjoyed by kids of all ages. It is crumbly like sand but can easily be molded into any shape. Made with only three simple ingredients, Moon Sand is easy to make and can last for weeks when stored in a container with a lid. Moon Sand can be a little messy so it is recommended to play outside on a tarp.

For the next few weeks we will be sharing fun activities to make at home that will help entertain kids. These fun activities involve essential oils and can help them discover different scents, colors, and textures – See more at: //doterrablog.com/diy-flubber/#sthash.j7kWE2in.dpuf

First up on the list of fun activities is homemade flubber! This gooey concoction is a ton of fun and will keep little hands busy for a long time. This flubber slowly melts into a fun ooze and stretches to make fun shapes.

Week of Healthy Habits- Sleep

Why does everyone talk about sleep???   BECAUSE IT'S THAT IMPORTANT!

"I didn't sleep well last night"
"Why did I stay up so late"
"My kids were up so early today"

Sleep is that important, that people actually make it part of their daily conversation!!!  It effects everything; mood, energy, skin, hormones.....you name it!!!!  So get sleeping!!!  Read below for more information and how you can incorporate essential oils.

Which is most important: Diet, Exercise, or Sleep?

Everyone knows that diet and exercise are key components of any healthy lifestyle. Another key pillar of health, equally important and arguably even more so, is sleep. Although the amount of sleep a person needs varies, experts recommend that adults get at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night (1). Unfortunately, about 33 percent of Americans are not getting the recommend amount of sleep per night, and approximately one in five adults in the United States experience occasional sleeplessness or difficulty sleeping (2). There are many factors that can negatively impact how much (and how well) a person sleeps, from family (think newborn baby), to the conveniences of modern life (like 24-hour access to technology), to varying work schedules (3), quality and age of mattresses and pillows (4), and don’t forget consumption of alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine. This list can go on and on, and far too often sleep is the first thing that many of us neglect in order to meet the demands of our busy schedules.

Why Is Sleep So Important?

Sleep doesn’t exist to just pass time or to keep us from working 24 hours a day. Sleep is important because it is inherently physically and mentally healing, and it allows for our bodies to not only recoup from the stress of everyday life, but also to recharge and refocus. Depriving your body of sleep has been associated with many health risks and places a tremendous burden on virtually every organ system in your body. Lack of adequate sleep affects our ability to lose, or maintain, a healthy weight; influences how we feel, learn, and behave; and negatively impacts our cardiovascular health and overall well-being. Even more importantly, not getting enough sleep can reduce reaction time and interfere with our ability to drive (3). The inability to drive safely not only puts those in the car at risk, but also those with whom we share the road. In short, the less sleep you get, the less opportunity you give your body to heal and prepare itself for the following day, reducing overall quality of life.

So What Can I Do About It?

Of course, life will always find a way to present obstacles that are out of our control, from a sick child to a last minute work project to a neighbor in need. Each of these will undoubtedly affect how we sleep. However, we must focus on what we can control, and fortunately there are several tips and techniques that you can apply to help ensure you are not only getting enough sleep but also getting quality sleep.

Tips for a Better Night’s Sleep

1. Eat Well and Maintain a Healthy Exercise Routine – Eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise keeps our weight in check, but it also helps with sleep. Eating high carbohydrate foods floods the muscles with glucose, causing involuntary muscle movements during sleep, which disrupts rest. Exercising too close to bedtime ramps up metabolism and body temperature and can make it difficult to fall asleep. If you get hungry before bed, try snacking on a hand full of nuts. Nuts provide protein and fat, which are not only satisfying, but are slowly digested, which can provide a calm sleep, and rich in magnesium, a mineral that helps to calm the nervous system.

2. Maintain a Rhythm – Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule, going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time. Creating this rhythm helps regulate your body’s internal clock and may help you sleep better.

3. Just Say No to Alcohol, Caffeine, Nicotine, and Electronics– All of these can make going to sleep difficult. Don’t drink alcohol or caffeinated drinks too close to bedtime. Remove all electronics from the bedroom, including TVs, computers, and other electronic devices. Try to avoid bright light at least an hour before going to bed. Darkness will help your body begin producing melatonin, a hormone that naturally regulates sleep. To help keep your internal clock in balance, be sure to expose yourself to sunlight in the morning, which naturally tells your body to wake up.

4. Keep Cool – Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark, and relaxing environment, which is neither too hot, nor too cold. Your bed and pillows should be supportive, yet comfortable. If you experience shoulder, hip, or back pain in the morning, you can be sure you did not rest as well as you could have. It may be time for new bedding.

5. Wind Down – Your body needs time to shift into sleep mode, so spend the last hour before bed doing a calming activity such as reading or taking a warm bath. Certain drinks, such as chamomile tea, may be relaxing and non-stimulating.

6. Use Calming Essential Oils – Essential oils like Lavender and Bergamot are rich in linalool and linalyl acetate, compounds that have well-known relaxing properties. These oils can be diffused aromatically in the bedroom to create a calming and peaceful environment, perfect for getting a good night’s sleep. They can also be used topically and taken internally to calm the nervous system, promote relaxation, and lead to a restful sleep. Try placing two to four drops of Lavender or Bergamot essential oil in a warm, herbal tea (Chamomile, Lemongrass, etc.), or another favorite uncaffeinated beverage about 30 minutes before going to bed, or add two to four drops of Lavender into an empty capsule and swallow about 30 minutes before bed.

Week Of Healthy Habits- Forgive

forgive

play
verb  for·give   \fər-ˈgiv, fȯr-\

Simple Definition of forgive

Popularity: Top 10% of words
  • : to stop feeling anger toward (someone who has done something wrong) : to stop blaming (someone)
  • : to stop feeling anger about (something) : to forgive someone for (something wrong)

The word FORGIVE keeps popping up in my life.  It is such a small word but so powerful.  When most people think of the word, they think of forgiving others, people in our past, or in the present.  A feeling that we hold on to, that we use our energy on, energy that could be used in a much healthier and loving way.

I want to ask you to shift your thoughts.....to not forgive someone else....but to forgive yourself.  Close your eyes, think of you.  Think of any resentment, belief or energy you are using on you, that you can let go of.

My New Years resolution as I might have mentioned, is making time for me.  Using doTERRA Forgive Essential Oil is one of the many ways I will be working on creating this space.

Day After Your Holiday Party.....

'Tis the Season!

Image result for doterra hangover pictures

Everyone is talking about it and doing it....celebrating good cheer.  Sometimes this celebration can get the best of us and we can over indulge in the holiday eggnog!  Then the next day is a little harder to get everything done that we need to get done!

It's just another one of the many times I turned to my essential oils!

My absolute go to oils for this sort of morning is my hangover trifecta- Lemon, Wild Orange and Peppermint.  I love these because you can drink them in your water, inhale them, apply topically or diffuse them......however for the really hard mornings I strongly suggest doing all of the above.  Even if you have to get up a little earlier (I know, easier said than done), it is SO worth it to get these essential oil combos in!  For me, it really pays off!

DIFFUSE

  • 3 Drops Wild Orange
  • 3 Drops Lemon
  • 3 Drops Peppermint

First thing I do is get my diffusers out and start diffusing.  This helps me get up and get started.  I continue diffusing this throughout the house.

ESSENTIAL OIL COCKTAIL (And not like the ones from the night before!)

  • 3 Drops Wild Orange
  • 3 Drops Lemon
  • 3 Drops Pepperming
  • 12 oz Cold Water
First I add the essential oils to my glass, then add the water.  I think it helps distribute the oils through out the glass.  Remember to ALWAYS use glass or stainless steel when mixing any oils to your beverages.  I love using my glass water bottle because I am usually on the go all day and can bring this with me.  You can keep refilling your water bottle with water and continue cleansing and detoxifying your body through out the day.

MASSAGE
  • 1 tsp FCO
  • 2 Drops Lavender
  • 2 Drops Lemon
  • 2 Drops Peppermint
  • 2 Drops Wild Orange
Before I get out of bed, I take a few extra minutes to massage this blend into the bottom of my feet.  It takes 20 seconds for the oils to get into your blood stream, so I know this starts working almost immediately.  Any left on my hands, I breathe in deeply and put on the back of my neck.

PAST TENSE

I recently tried this roller bottle of PastTense.  I always carry it with me to help with tension, stress or headaches.  Needless to say, it fits in perfect to "foggy morning" routine!

Hope this helps you to continue enjoying your celebrations, and the next day!

Essential Oils 101

Why should I try essential oils and are the just the new trend??

When I first started using Essential oils I thought how could my health improve and my families health improve by something so simple?  If this was so amazing, why wasn't everyone doing it and why have I not heard about them before now??

When I told my cousin I was using Essential Oils, she quickly replied "oh that seems to be the new trend".  I couldn't be more happy that people are exploring the most powerful forms of healing found from our earth!  As for being a trend, essential oils have been referenced all the way back to the Egyptians and referenced in the Bible.  You might remember the 3 wise men bringing Frankincense (also called liquid gold) and Myrrh to the manger after Jesus was born.  So, yes, you might think it's a trend right now.....but essential oils have been around for a long time!

The fact is, we have been using products that we buy at the store which are chemical replicas of what our earth provides for us.  It is cheaper for companies to replicate them and mass produce them.  The reason these companies spend billions of dollars doing this is because you can't patent a plant or natural process....there for you can't make money.  It's that simple.

So you might be asking, what are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are the "essential" part of all plants.  They circulate through the plant, carrying the nutrition and protecting the plants against any harm.  They keep the plants alive and healthy.   That is in effect what they do to our bodies when used!

Many people think these oils are oily in texture, that is not the case.  They are very light and quickly absorb into the skin.

Essential oils are extracted from various parts of the plan; roots, stems, bark, seeds, and flowers.  When these oils are extracted into essential oils, humans can benefit from their powerful, healing and protective compounds.

To give you idea of how to benefit from essential oils:

Bacteria and viruses are all around us and our immune system is designed to fight off these bugs.  But sometimes we get sick.  The most common, especially this time of year, are the common cold or flu.  This is when most of us go to the doctor, to which we are told:

1) It's a bacterial infection- you will likely be prescribed a antibiotic.
2) It's a viral infection- you will likely be told to go home, rest and drink lots of fluids.

Both of these scenarios are usually frustrating.  You have to take the time to go to the Dr., pay a co-pay, and have a 5 minute consultation.  The reason antibiotics are not prescribed for viral infections is because antibiotics are not able to penetrate the cell walls where the virus resides.  The bacterial infection resides on the outside of the cell walls.  Using essential oils is a great option for both bacterial and viral infections because the oils are able to get to the the bacteria on the outside and penetrate the cell walls to get to the virus!

Image of how DoTerra Essential Oils cross the cell membrane to attack viruses.:

If you are just starting out, essential oils are all natural, there are many benefits that can be gained, support your health without many of the side effects that occur with medications.  If you are using high quality oils, they are very concentrated and a small amount can be effective.  For example, 1 drop of peppermint essential oils equals 28 cups of peppermint tea!

How Do I Use Essential Oils?

There are three main methods to using oils:

Topically:  When using Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils, one of the most common ways is applying them on the skin.  By applying them this way, the compounds can quickly be absorbed through the skin and into your body.  You can apply the oils directly on the effected area or on the bottom of your feet- this is because the feet contain large pores that can quickly absorb the oils.  When using the essential oils, you can use them neat (meaning alone) or diluted (meaning with a carrier oil).

Aromatically: This is when you inhale the oils; either directly from the bottle, a few drops in the palm of your hand, or diffused.  When inhaled, the senses are heighten and certain reactions within the body can be triggered.  There are benefits from using a diffuser, by releasing essential oils into the air, cleansing the air, and gaining the benefits as the oil is assimilated through the air into your body.

Internally: Before I say anything, it is very important you know that ONLY high quality oils can be used internally.  Most that are not high quality will state they should not be used internally.  However, high quality oils can be taken via mouth.  Placing 1 or 2 drops directly into your mouth or they can be ingested through a small capsule that is swallowed.

Now that we have covered what essential oils are, how to use them and the many benefits.....decided for yourself if you want to experience them!  I am always here if you have any questions!!!
