Essential Oils 101
Why should I try essential oils and are the just the new trend??
When I first started using Essential oils I thought how could my health improve and my families health improve by something so simple? If this was so amazing, why wasn't everyone doing it and why have I not heard about them before now??
When I told my cousin I was using Essential Oils, she quickly replied "oh that seems to be the new trend". I couldn't be more happy that people are exploring the most powerful forms of healing found from our earth! As for being a trend, essential oils have been referenced all the way back to the Egyptians and referenced in the Bible. You might remember the 3 wise men bringing Frankincense (also called liquid gold) and Myrrh to the manger after Jesus was born. So, yes, you might think it's a trend right now.....but essential oils have been around for a long time!
The fact is, we have been using products that we buy at the store which are chemical replicas of what our earth provides for us. It is cheaper for companies to replicate them and mass produce them. The reason these companies spend billions of dollars doing this is because you can't patent a plant or natural process....there for you can't make money. It's that simple.
So you might be asking, what are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are the "essential" part of all plants. They circulate through the plant, carrying the nutrition and protecting the plants against any harm. They keep the plants alive and healthy. That is in effect what they do to our bodies when used!
Many people think these oils are oily in texture, that is not the case. They are very light and quickly absorb into the skin.
Essential oils are extracted from various parts of the plan; roots, stems, bark, seeds, and flowers. When these oils are extracted into essential oils, humans can benefit from their powerful, healing and protective compounds.
To give you idea of how to benefit from essential oils:
Bacteria and viruses are all around us and our immune system is designed to fight off these bugs. But sometimes we get sick. The most common, especially this time of year, are the common cold or flu. This is when most of us go to the doctor, to which we are told:
1) It's a bacterial infection- you will likely be prescribed a antibiotic.
2) It's a viral infection- you will likely be told to go home, rest and drink lots of fluids.
Both of these scenarios are usually frustrating. You have to take the time to go to the Dr., pay a co-pay, and have a 5 minute consultation. The reason antibiotics are not prescribed for viral infections is because antibiotics are not able to penetrate the cell walls where the virus resides. The bacterial infection resides on the outside of the cell walls. Using essential oils is a great option for both bacterial and viral infections because the oils are able to get to the the bacteria on the outside and penetrate the cell walls to get to the virus!
If you are just starting out, essential oils are all natural, there are many benefits that can be gained, support your health without many of the side effects that occur with medications. If you are using high quality oils, they are very concentrated and a small amount can be effective. For example, 1 drop of peppermint essential oils equals 28 cups of peppermint tea!
How Do I Use Essential Oils?
There are three main methods to using oils:
Topically: When using Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils, one of the most common ways is applying them on the skin. By applying them this way, the compounds can quickly be absorbed through the skin and into your body. You can apply the oils directly on the effected area or on the bottom of your feet- this is because the feet contain large pores that can quickly absorb the oils. When using the essential oils, you can use them neat (meaning alone) or diluted (meaning with a carrier oil).
Aromatically: This is when you inhale the oils; either directly from the bottle, a few drops in the palm of your hand, or diffused. When inhaled, the senses are heighten and certain reactions within the body can be triggered. There are benefits from using a diffuser, by releasing essential oils into the air, cleansing the air, and gaining the benefits as the oil is assimilated through the air into your body.
Internally: Before I say anything, it is very important you know that ONLY high quality oils can be used internally. Most that are not high quality will state they should not be used internally. However, high quality oils can be taken via mouth. Placing 1 or 2 drops directly into your mouth or they can be ingested through a small capsule that is swallowed.
Now that we have covered what essential oils are, how to use them and the many benefits.....decided for yourself if you want to experience them! I am always here if you have any questions!!!
